Sponsoring a Junior Jockey Camp Student

Dear Thoroughbred Racing Patron,

I am pleased to announce the second annual Julie Krone Jockey Camp, to be held August 1 thru 8th at Long Shadows Farm in Cambridge, N.Y., located just 20 miles from Historic Saratoga Springs.

I will be serving as host and instructor for a select group of eight young people from the surrounding area who will attend the Julie Krone Junior Jockey Camp courtesy of the Long Shadows Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of horses who have been abandoned, abused, neglected, or are no longer wanted or cared for by their owners.

The Julie Krone Junior Jockey Camp is designed to provide motivated boys and girls from lower-income families an opportunity to learn basic horsemanship and expose them to the skills required to gain employment as grooms, exercise riders or even jockeys in a professional racetrack setting. With an emphasis on health and safety for both the horse and handler, the Jockey Camp curriculum will lean heavily toward not only a positive presentation of the sport of horse racing, but also the value of understanding the psychology of the equine athlete, which served me well during my Hall of Fame career of more than 3,700 victories.

We are using as a model for our first Jockey Camp a similar program run by Eclipse Award winning jockey Frankie Lovato, Jr., which for many years was part of his popular Jockey World promotion of Thoroughbred racing. Frankie has been kind enough to share elements of his program to help make our Jockey Camp a success.

Eight lucky students, ages 12-17, will be selected based on the submission of written essay in which they will be asked to share their hopes and dreams of pursuing jobs working with Thoroughbreds in a farm, training center, or racetrack environment.

My goal is to secure either individual or corporate sponsorships for the Julie Krone Junior Jockey Camp and its first class of eight students. $1,500 sponsorship for a student covers instruction, equipment, horse care, student meals, and transportation to and from Long Shadows Farm, as well as JKJJC logo T-shirts and caps. Generous donations above and beyond the student costs will go toward the development and expansion of future Jockey Camps in an ongoing effort to expose young people to the greatest sport under the sun, and to the horses who make horse racing possible.

Donations and sponsorship's to help students attend Julie Krone Junior Jockey Camp can be made through Jockey World Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated in horse racing education and welfare for our youth who wish to work in the thoroughbred racing industry.
